The Foolish Householder

ཁྱིམ་བདག་གླེན་པ།

ལུང་པ་ཞིག་ལ་ཁྱིམ་བདག་ཕྱུག་པོ་ཞིག་ཡོད། ཉིན་ཞིག་གི་ཞོགས་པར། ཁོང་རྟ་ཞིག་ལ་ཞོན། བུང་བུ་ཞིག་ཁྲིད་ནས་རང་ཡུལ་དུ་ལོག་ཡོང་བའི་ལམ་བར་དུ། ཡུལ་དེར་རྐུན་མ་ཧམ་ཆེན་གཉིས་ཡོད་པ་ཁོང་གཉིས་ཀྱིས་མཐོང་སྟེ། བོང་བུ་དེ་བརྐུ་བར་འདོད་ནས། དལ་བ་དབ་བུར་ཁྱིམ་བདག་གི་རྗེས་སུ་འཇབས་ཏེ་ཕྱིན་པ་རེད།

There was once a wealthy house­hold­er in a val­ley. Early one morn­ing, he was head­ing back to his home while rid­ing a horse and lead­ing a don­key behind. In that place, there were two greedy thieves who saw him. With the aim of steal­ing the don­key, they stealth­ily snuck up behind the householder.

རྐུན་མ་གཅིག་གིས་བོང་བུ་ཕྱིར་ཁྲིད་པ་དང་། རྐུན་མ་གཞན་དེས་བོང་བུའི་མགོ་ཡི་མཐུར་དེ་རང་གི་མགོ་ལ་གོན་ནས། ཁྱིམ་བདག་གི་རྗེས་སུ་འབྲངས། ཁྱིམ་བདག་རང་ཁྱིམ་དུ་སླེབས་ལ་ཉེ་བའི་སྐབས། ཕྱིར་མིག་ཅིག་བལྟས་ཙ་ན། རང་གི་བོང་བུ་མཐོང་རྒྱུ་མེད་ཁར། མཐུར་དེ་མི་ཞིག་གི་མགོ་ལ་གྱོན་ནས་རྗེས་སུ་ཡོང་གིན་ཡོད་པ་མཐོང་བས་རེ་ཞིག་ཧད་དེ་ལུས།

One of the thieves led the don­key away while the oth­er took the bridle off the donkey’s head and pro­ceeded to put it on his own head and fol­low the house­hold­er. When the house­hold­er had almost reached his home, he glanced behind him. Not only was his don­key nowhere to be seen, he was moment­ar­ily dumb­struck to see a man with a bridle on his head fol­low­ing him!

རྐུན་མ་ན་རེ། བདག་པོ་ལགས། ཁྱོད་ཡ་མཚན་དགོས་དོན་མེད། ང་ལྷའི་ཡུལ་དུ་ནོར་འཁྲུལ་ཤོར་ཏེ། ལྷའི་དབང་པོ་བརྒྱ་བྱིན་གྱིས་ང་རང་ལྷ་ཁྲིམས་ལྟར། མི་ཡུལ་འདིར་བོང་བུའི་སྐྱེ་བ་ལེན་དུ་བཅུག་བྱུང་། ཡིན་ནའང་ད་ལྟ་ཉེས་པ་དག་ཟིན་པས། མི་ལུས་ཐོབ་པ་ཡིན། ཞེས་བཤད།

The thief then explained: “Dear Mas­ter, there is no point being taken aback! I com­mit­ted a mis­deed in the god realm and the Lord of the Gods, Indra, in accord­ance with the laws of the gods, ban­ished me to a don­key rebirth in this human realm. How­ever, since that wrong­do­ing has now been pur­i­fied, I have attained a human form.”

ཁྱིམ་བདག་ན་རེ། དེ་ལྟར་ཡིན་ན། ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ངེད་ཚང་གི་དོན་དུ་དཀའ་ལས་མང་པོ་ཞིག་མྱངས་སོང་། འདིར་དངུལ་སྲང་ལྔ་བཅུ་ཐམ་པ་ཡོད་པས། ཁྱོད་ལ་གླ་ཡོན་དུ་སྟེར། ད་སོང་ནས་ལུང་པ་སྐྱིད་པོ་ཞིག་ཏུ་འཚོ་བ་རོལ་ཤོག རྗེས་སུ་བྱ་ངན་འདྲ་བྱས་ནས་ཕྱིར་བོང་བུར་འགྱུར་དུ་མ་འཇུག་ཨང་། ཞེས་བསླབ་བྱ་བྱས་ཏེ་བཏང་ངོ་། །

Then the house­hold­er said, “If that is so, you have gone through many hard­ships for the sake of our fam­ily. I have here exactly 50 coins to give you as com­pens­a­tion. Now, go forth and live your life in a happy land! In the future, do not engage in any neg­at­ive actions caus­ing you to become a don­key again,” he advised him and let him go.

ཉིན་ཤས་རྗེས། ཁྱིམ་བདག་དེས་བོང་བུ་ཞིག་ཉོ་དགོས་བསམས་ཏེ། ཁྲོམ་ལ་ཕྱིན་པ་ན། རང་གི་བོང་བུ་དེ་ཁྲོམ་རར་འཚོང་བཞིན་པ་མཐོང་བས། སེམས་སྐྱོ་བའི་ངང་། ཨ་ཙི། ལས་ངན་པ། ཡང་ཁྱོད་ཕྱིར་བོང་བུ་ཞིག་ཏུ་གྱུར་འདུག བྱ་བ་ངན་པ་ཅི་ཞིག་བྱས་པ་ཡིན་ནམ། དཀོན་མཆོག་གསུམ་པོས་མཁྱེན། ཞེས་སྨྲས་ཏེ། དངུལ་སྲང་ལྔ་བཅུ་སྤྲད་དེ་བོང་བུ་ཕྱིར་ཉོས་སོ། །

A few days later, the house­hold­er went to the mar­ket with the idea of pur­chas­ing a don­key. See­ing his own don­key on sale there, he was dev­ast­ated and uttered, “Oh no! What bad karma you have! Have you engaged in evil actions? You have become a don­key again! What evil action did you do? May the Three Jew­els show com­pas­sion!” He pro­ceeded to give 50 coins to buy the don­key back!
