Its aims are simple: to showcase current research, share knowledge and ideas, connect those interested in higher education and academia and bridge different cultures.

Introduction to English Literary Studies

This session introduces participants to the study of English literature through a variety of works from Old English wanderers’ songs to contemporary poems. We will explore interpretive approaches to texts and practice close reading techniques whilst thinking about literary form in its wider intellectual and historical contexts.

Instructors work individually with each student to design a curriculum suited to their level. All of our tutors are highly experienced language teachers proficient in diverse instruction methods. You will learn with a dedicated tutor who will instruct you and share learning materials just as you would in a classroom. Loplao will provide all the required materials for this course.

For Whom

Our private classes are for anyone who wishes to study Tibetan—regardless of their skill level or goals.

Contents

Private lessons are tailored to each student’s needs and can vary widely in format. They will be entirely based on the student’s goals and particular strengths and weaknesses. Some students work with Buddhist philosophical texts and historical documents, while others begin with learning the Tibetan alphabet. Tutors can also focus on colloquial conversation skills, Tibetan songs, or specific subjects and vocabulary.

Course Materials

Loplao will provide all class materials unless the student already has a specific text or resource they wish to use.

Trial Lessons 

You can book a 30-minute trial lesson with one of our tutors before your class to get a sense of our private classes.

Instructor

We have several excellent native-speaking Tibetan language teachers, and you will be assigned to one of our tutors. We select our tutors with great care, and all of them have more than two years of experience teaching Tibetan. If the student has a specific interest, we can recommend a tutor who is best equipped to address that need.

Weekend Classes

Tailored to your level, schedule, and goals.

This course is for people who are passionate about learning Tibetan language and translation, but have full schedules during the work week. You will receive 90 minutes of weekend instruction with similarly motivated people around the world.

 This long term weekend class trains students in intermediate Tibetan and translation skills. 

The class starts on Sunday the 15th October 2023 and finishes on Sunday the 14th Janunary 2024. All the lessons will be recorded and will made available for students to watch later if anyone misses one or two classes.

  • LENGTH: 14 weeks (22 hours of class)
  • LEVELS: All
  • MINIMUM AGE: 13 years old
  • HOURS: 90 minutes of language lessons per session.
  • CLASS SIZE: Average 8, maximum 15 students in each class.
  • TIMING: 6 to 7:30pm BST. 
BEGINNER COURSE

This course covers the Tibetan alphabet, basic grammar, and essential vocabulary.

By the end of this course students will be:

  • familiar with the Tibetan alphabet and different consonant and vowel combinations
  • be able to read simple Tibetan words
  • be able to produce some simple Tibetan phrases
PRE-INTERMEDIATE COURSE

This course covers simple grammar, essential vocabulary, and basic spoken Tibetan.

By the end of this course students will be:

  • able to identify and use simple grammatical structures
  • proficient with a Tibetan dictionary
  • able to read quickly with correct pronunciation
  • able to read short stories and media articles with simple grammar
 INTERMEDIATE COURSE

The intermediate course is designed for those who have considerable knowledge of Tibetan language and grammar.

This course aims to:

  • broaden language skills
  • introduce students to a rich and active vocabulary
  • develop increasingly sophisticated reading translation skills through engaging with a range of texts
ADVANCED COURSE

The advanced course is designed for those who can confidently speak and understand Tibetan, and who wish to improve their reading and writing skills. The language of instruction will be in Tibetan only.

Students on this course will:

  • advance their reading and translation skills through engaging with a range of texts and topics, including Buddhist texts, newspapers, and contemporary literature
  • focus on the extended writing process, where they are encouraged to plan and draft letters, blog posts, and simple essays in Tibetan

Evening classes

Tailored to your level, schedule, and goals.

If you are willing to spend two hours per week on Tibetan in the evening, this is the right course for you. Because the course runs for over three months, students develop a consistent language learning practice and work with classmates to improve their Tibetan skills. Our experienced tutor designs classes that are fun and interesting, drawing on a variety of learning resources. Loplao will provide all the materials required for this course.

This evening class is for  Pre-intermediate level students.

This class starts on Wednesday the 19th of July 2023 and finishes on Wednesday the 25th  October 2023. All the lessons will be recorded and made available for students to watch later if anyone misses one or two classes.

  • VENUE: Online (zoom)
  • LENGTH: 15 weeks (19.5 hours of actual class.) 
  • LEVELS: All
  • MINIMUM AGE: 13 years old
  • HOURS: 90 minutes of language lessons per session.
  • CLASS SIZE: Average 8, maximum 15 students in each class.
  • TIMING: 6 to 7:30pm BST. 
BEGINNER COURSE
