Tibetan Language Summer School at Oxford

EasyTibetan organises two Intensive Tibetan Language Summer Schools, based in Oxford (July – August 2020). The course consists of daily lectures on Tibetan language and culture, ranging from Buddhism to Tibetan history and civilisation. With a particular focus on creating complete language and cultural immersion, this course aims to create a foundation for accelerated language learning.

Learning the Tibetan language enables one to access the vast canon of Buddhist literature preserved in Tibetan, with a unique range of texts many of which have been lost in their Indian originals.  It also creates an entry point into understanding the Tibetan worldview, with its imbibed Buddhist sensibilities. Hence, this intensive course is ideal for academics or research students in Tibetan studies, particularly who are about to undertake ethnographic fieldwork. However, this course is designed for  Buddhist practitioners as well.

We also welcome those who are simply interested in the Tibetan language and culture, or who want to learn some Tibetan before travelling to Tibetan speaking areas.

What Our Students Say

Easytibetan ran a wonderful, intense learning experience and always went the extra mile to make sure that all students were accommodated as much as possible, in light of our different learning needs and abilities. The text we used is one of the best language-learning texts I’ve seen yet, and I highly recommend this course.

Riamsara Kuyakanon Knapp

Learning Tibetan for Buddhism

I was excited to learn of the summertime Tibetan language program at Oxford because I was ready to take my very basic ability to read Tibetan script to the next level and learn basic conversational language skills.  The teacher was a very patient dedicated instructor; the course was well organized with drills in each of the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing; and I greatly enjoyed getting to know my very diverse classmates as well as engaging in the frequent cultural activities.  My skills improved in concrete and lasting ways, and I had fun every single day.

Paul Sireci

Learning Tibetan for Buddhism

The Tibetan Language Summer School’s Intensive Tibetan program gave us a unique opportunity to learn and experience the Tibetan language in a very appealing study environment at the University of Oxford with a Tibetan native speaker. The language classes were held in a friendly spirit with a small number of students and the teacher’s approach was very student-focused. The lectures held in the afternoons on various topics surrounding language, history, religion, literature, politics and even an introduction to meditation were informative, open to questions and nicely concluded the whole experience.

Learning Tibetan for academic studies

As a complete beginner, I found the Colloquial Tibetan Summer School a wonderful experience. The teacher was so generous in his teaching, and, with his patient encouragement, by the end of the fortnight I was beginning to decode this most bewildering of written languages. I fully recommend the course to anyone willing to ‘try hard’, and would myself happily return year after year.
